Geneva Motor Show - Mercedes

28 February 2006
Mercedes' muscle-fest
AMG shows no sign of giving up its quest for ever-greater power outputs. The badges denoting engine sizes keep on growing – and Geneva ushered in a brace of new models, the CLS63 and CLK63.

Those 63 badges denote a 6.3-litre V8 engine nestling under the bonnet of both cars. The CLS coupe develops 514bhp, while the CLK coupe and cabrio muster a still-impressive 481bhp.

Performance aplenty
With that sort of power, it's little wonder that these new Mercedes can scare many supercars. The CLS can sprint to 62mph in a scant 4.5sec, while the CLK twins aren't far behind.

If you have too many passengers for a coupe, then Mercedes also unveiled the R63 AMG. Yes, that 6.3-litre V8 even fits under the bonnet of the latest premium people-carrier.

All three new AMG models roll into UK showrooms later this year.

Green and mean
It wasn't all horsepower and 0-60mph times at Geneva, however. Mercedes also showed off its latest Bluetec clean-fuel diesels, which it confirmed will come to Europe by 2008.

This system can be fitted to normal Mercedes diesel models; an extra fuel tank holds the chemical urea, which cuts emissions dramatically.
