Geneva Motor Show - Toyota

28 February 2006
Could the Urban Cruiser be the new three-door Toyota RAV4?

The latest RAV4 is bigger than ever – it might even arrive in seven-seater stretched wheelbase guise eventually. With this model, though, you can't buy a three-door version.

Toyota is instead, perhaps, exploring whether it should introduce a smaller model and leave the RAV4 to fight it out with the big boys. The Urban Cruiser concept is the result, a car that's been developed by the company's European design studio ED2.

Nissan is convinced there's money to be made with such a small 4x4; its Qashqai goes into production at the end of this year, but it remains to be seen whether Toyota is as keen as its rival.

Anything else?
Yes, the Yaris T Sport.

It gets a more aggressive look than the rest of the recently introduced supermini range, with tougher-looking bumpers, a new grille, modified suspension and bigger alloys, and a more powerful 1.8-litre engine.

Please can I have a go?
We saw these i-swing 'personal mobility units' at the Tokyo Motor Show, but this is the first time they've been trundled out in Europe.

Presenting a look at how we might buzz around in the future, the i-swings are great fun to watch. Piloted by a grinning Toyota employee, the i-swing is operated by a pair of joysticks.

In upright city mode, the i-swing swoops and darts about with great agility. When you need to get between major urban centres, it lowers to the ground to pick up pace.
