GM is targeting the small family car market initially, because it offers the biggest potential market for the initiative.
In order to reduce development costs, the system will likely be based on existing models, such as the
Astra.
The electric motor is expected to give about 170bhp and 273lb ft of pulling power, which will all be available at any revs, unlike a turbodiesel.
That means a 0-100mph time of less than nine seconds and a top speed of 150kph (94mph).
Frank Weber, Vehicle Line Executive and Vehicle Chief Engineer, E-Flex Systems, says: 'Electricity gives us the potential to create a car that is emission-free and fun to drive.
'It is clear that people don't want to give up what they are used to from motoring - and E-Flex gives us that possibility.'
