If you want to buy the most powerful Golf ever put into production, you'll need at least £23,745 in your pocket.
If you want to buy the most powerful Golf ever put into production, you'll need at least £23,745 in your pocket.
That will get you the cheapest three-door version of the four-wheel-drive 247bhp R32, which goes on sale in November and has been priced by Volkswagen today. Five-door versions of the hot hatch start at £24,245.
For a further £1330, you can have the impressive Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG), which provides a fully automatic mode or the option to shift ratios manually with steering wheel-mounted paddles.
The DSG transmission reduces 0-62mph times for the R32. The standard six-speed manual finishes the sprint in 6.5sec, while the DSG-equipped version manages it 6.2sec.
The DSG versions are a full second faster than a £19,995 Golf GTI to 62mph, and match the £18,995 237bhp front-wheel-drive Vauxhall Astra VXR.
Standard equipment across the range includes dual-zone climate control, a 10-speaker CD sound system, 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights and wipers, electric windows and mirrors, front, side and curtain airbags, stability control and sports suspension that is 20mm lower than the standard Golf.
The options list is long and includes Recaro sports seats for £945, leather upholstery for £1645 and satellite-navigation for £1845.
Distinctive features for the R32 include an aluminium front grille, blue brake calipers, tinted rear light clusters, and centrally mounted twin exhaust pipes.
• Volkswagen has set up a dedicated website for those wanting to place an order for the R32. Visit www.newgolfr32.co.uk. The first deliveries are expected in November.
