Government’s new road laws - Mobile phones

Motorists using a handheld mobile phone while driving face a £60 fine and three penalty points instead of the current £30 fixed penalty.

The Department for Transport hopes the stiffer punishments will encourage more motorists to abide by the ban on handheld phones. Various surveys have shown a widespread disregard of the ban since it was introduced late in 2003.
