Green motoring is sexy - it's official

29 March 2007

Today the Eden Project, the Cornwall visitor attraction that boasts the world's largest greenhouses, launched a new event called The Sexy Green Car Show.

The show includes a range of environmentally friendly vehicles, such as the bioethanol Ford Focus FFV (Flexible Fuel Vehicle), Saab's 9-3 convertible BioPower hybrid concept car, Vauxhall's Zafira Hydrogen 3 Fuel-Cell MPV, an electric Smart ForTwo and Citroen's C3 Stop-Start.

General Motors (GM), owner of Saab and Vauxhall, wants to be the first global manufacturer to sell one million hydrogen fuel-cell cars. These produce only water as a by-product.

One of the other stars of the show is a 1920 Ford Model T, which runs on petrol. However, Ford's founder, Henry T. Ford, said in 1916 that he believed biethanol was the future for petrol cars.

'The world is waiting for a substitute for petrol and the day is not too far distant when, for every barrel of petrol, a barrel of ethanol must be substituted', he said.

The Eden Project's marketing director, David Meneer, said: 'Traditionally, environmental organisations have not had too much to say about cars, except to try to persuade people not to use them, and more recently, not to buy 4x4s.

'Our show aims to give motorists who want to go green a better understanding of government schemes such as fridge-type energy-efficiency labels on cars, tax bands on emissions and variable congestion charges.'

The show begins today and ends on April 15.
