Fuel-efficient hybrid systems and clever automatic gearboxes will become far more common as two key players in the automotive industry join forces.

Bosch and Getrag, who already supply car manufacturers with electronics and gearboxes, have teamed up to combine two fuel-efficient systems in one.

Bosch will use its expertise with hybrid systems that combine a petrol or diesel engine with battery-powered electric motors. Getrag's experience with automatics will be used on dual-clutch transmissions like the Volkswagen group's Direct Shift Gearbox.

Together, the two companies say they can provide an all-in-one solution to car manufacturers that could cut 20% off your fuel bills.

Although there's no timescale on when the systems might be on offer, the collaboration could easily accelerate the availability of hybrids and twin clutch gearboxes in more makes and models.
