Large numbers of speed cameras could be faulty

Many drivers could be wrongly convicted of speeding because speed cameras have not been working properly.

The BBC's Politics Show asked to see calibration certificates from seven road safety partnerships, and in one of them, Hertfordshire, eight out of 16 cameras were found to be faulty. Safety camera partnerships are obliged to submit their cameras for testing each year.

Camera partnerships were tested in Essex, Northamptonshire, Norfolk, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire. Suffolk declined to give details.

Anti-camera groups say that if the statistics were applied nationwide, up to 3000 cameras could be faulty.

However, a spokesperson for Norfolk camera partnership said 'A driver who has concerns can look at the film. If we have any doubt, it's always given to the motorist.'
