Nissan's Qashqai small family car has been given a five-star Euro NCAP rating for adult protection, achieving the highest-ever score for any vehicle.

The Qashqai scored maximum points in side impact tests. In front impact tests, maximum points were awarded for the protection offered to both the driver and passenger dummies.

Double seatbelt pretensioners ensured that the driver's forward movement was very limited, keeping the knees and thighs well away from the dashboard.

The car scored four out of five stars for child protection and two out of four stars for pedestrian protection.

Euro NCAP's secretary general Adrian Hobbs said: 'Congratulations, Nissan. This is a particularly impressive result, since the Qashqai is a new vehicle in this category.'

Kia Carens results
Kia's small MPV, the Carens, has received four stars from Euro NCAP for adult protection, three out of four stars for child protection and one star for pedestrian protection. It is the first time Kia has put forward a small MPV to be tested.

Euro NCAP said that the car got a weak rating for the protection of the driver's lower leg, feet and ankles, and structures in the dashboard presented a risk of injury to both driver and passenger.
