Should I buy one? Well, you'd have to be the planet's most die-hard hot hatch fan to put up with the Mugen on a daily basis. The hard suspension means you feel every nook and cranny on the road surface, and even small potholes give you a proper whack in the backside. The big tyres transmit a lot of road noise, too, and the big exhausts boom away noisily at speed.
Plenty of other things would drive you potty, too. There are three Mugen-specific dials on the right-hand side of the dashboard, which reflect onto the windscreen when it's dark and obscure your view of the road. The seatbelt buckle digs into your left thigh constantly, and although rear visibility is no worse than in a regular Type R, it's still pretty woeful.
However, if you think it's worth putting up with all that for the amazing dynamic capabilities, then you'll be disappointed. The Mugen concept car is just that – a concept, a one-off.
For now at least...
The future? Mugen is currently in the process of gauging public opinion on the concept car, and if the feedback is positive and the demand is there, there could well be some sort of production car in the pipeline.
The details are yet to be decided – details such as which of the modifications will be applied to a production version, how much it'll cost and when it'll go on sale. What we do know is that any production version will be built in extremely small numbers, so you'll have to get in quick.
Honda tells us that these decisions will probably be made by the end of October. We'll keep you posted.
