Renault might have four different hot Megane Renaultsports already, but now it has added a fifth diesel option to the range.
Priced from £18,930, the 175bhp 2.0-litre car is £260 more expensive than the stripped-out 225 Cup version, but it's at least £640 cheaper than other petrol-powered versions with comparable equipment levels.
With a 0-62mph time of 8.5sec, the Megane Renaultsport dCi 175 car is 2.0sec slower than the slowest petrol version, however, although fuel consumption of 43.5mpg on the combined cycle is over 10mpg better.
Its top speed of 137mph is also 10mph slower, but lower carbon dioxide emissions of 172g/km mean savings of hundreds of pounds a year for company car drivers.
Standard equipment includes air-conditioning, 17-inch aluminium wheels and cruise control. The stiffer Megane Cup chassis, as featured on the Megane R26, is available as an option.
