How good is our crystal ball? - BMW X5

18 October 2007
When we first published these pictures of the all-new X5, you couldn't tell just how much bigger the new model is compared with the car it replaced.

The new model is 19cm longer and 5cm wider than the previous version which meant BMW was able to fit in a further two seats.

Computer-generated image

From the front, this CGI is very similar to the old X5 (2000-2007). The grille and the vertical front, for example, are almost identical.

The back is more X3-like, though, and makes the previous X5 look lofty in comparison. A more rounded rear and curvier tail-lights help achieve this look.

Production car

From the back, the computer-generated image and new X5 are a pretty good match.

The one noticeable difference, though, is the lack of a split tailgate on the CGI.

The front of the production car looks more butch, too, mainly because of the more rounded grille and bigger headlights.
