How to... cut your service bills - Shop around franchised dealerships

05 December 2006
FOR Peace of mind; pleasant environment
AGAINST Most expensive servicing costs

Many car owners head faithfully to their nearest franchised dealer when it's time for their service.

It won't be the cheapest option, but they'll have the peace of mind that comes from knowing everything will be done as it should be.

A recent poll of whatcar.com readers revealed that more than 60% followed this route for servicing, compared with 30% who use an independent and 10% who service their car themselves.

Franchised premises tend to be smart with comfortable waiting areas and, if any repairs need to be carried out under warranty, it can be easier if this is done through a main dealer.

Don't take the first quote you're given, however. We phoned a few dealers to get a quote for our Skoda Octavia vRS, which was due for its first service. Our first quote, from Ashmore Green Skoda in Newbury, seemed quite high at £255. Next we tried Jewsons Skoda in nearby Oxford, which quoted us £180. So by driving just 34 miles we could have saved £75, and still had the assurance of a main dealer service.

The savings don't stop there, though. You can cut the price even further by haggling over the cost of the service with your dealer.
