John and Helen Taylor set a new world record in April 2006 by driving a car 17,961 miles around the world in 78 days on just 24 tanks of fuel. Already the holder of 34 world records for efficient driving, John and Helen have some top tips for saving fuel.

• Keep the windows and sunroof shut.

• Tune and service your engine.

• Keep tyres inflated correctly.

• Use cruise control whenever it's possible to do so.

• Avoid carrying excess weight.

• Take the roofrack off.

• Avoid rush hour – try to travel off-peak.

• Avoid small fuel fill-ups – petrol evaporates when the filler cap is removed.

• Avoid excess idling – switch the engine off in long delays.

• Plan trips to avoid congestion.
