How to... save a packet on a pre-reg - So is it dodgy?

17 August 2006
Garel Rhys, director of the Centre for Automotive Industry Research at Cardiff Business School, explains: 'Pre-registration allows manufacturers to limit the pain of poor new car sales.

'They don't need to publicly reduce the sticker price, but they can effectively discount some new cars. This helps them maximise profit, keep the factories working and maintain market share.'

There are still lots pre-reg cars for sale where the retention period is up, so if you buy one, the registration documents can be filled out there and then so you can become the registered keeper.

You can then drive it away with all the correct documents in your hand.

It's not always like this, and you won't necessarily be able to stroll into your local dealer and ask to see their pre-reg stock.

Not all garages have access to cars. They may have a number of cars on their books that they can sell as pre-reg vehicles but they might not be on their forecourt.

The larger dealerships often have access to these cars, while the smaller garages miss out.

Not every model will be available as a pre-reg and it is highly likely that you will have to compromise on your chosen trim level and or optional extras. Say goodbye to the sunroof.

Only certain brands want, or need to pre-reg. For example, you'll struggle to find a pre-reg Mini.
