How to... save a packet on a pre-reg - What are the pitfalls?

Not having the V5C registration document in your possession can lead to some bureaucratic dramas.

The V5C registration document does not denote ownership – a common misconception – it merely proves you are the registered keeper. Sales invoices and receipts are the proof of ownership.

The absence of a V5C in your Important Paperwork drawer can have the word 'headache' written all over it.

If you get stopped by the police and they ask for your documents, then you face a lot of chasing around and countless phone calls to the DVLA, the dealership and, probably, the local police station.

Then there's insurance. Most car insurers assume that the owner of a new car has their name as the registered keeper on the V5C, and if you had to make a claim before the registration document has been transferred you might hit problems.
