How to... upgrade your car's stereo - Dynaudio in VW Passat

29 January 2007
Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDi SEL £23,030

UPGRADE Dynaudio Soundpack
COST £730-£2150
PCP COST £21 per month
Entry-level Passats are saddled with a prosaic hi-fi system: you don't even get rear speakers as standard. However, step up to this SEL model, and the standard-fit system is more impressive, including eight speakers and a six-disc in-dash CD autochanger.

You can do better still, by opting for upgraded speakers and amplification from Dynaudio. This 'Soundpack' is available either as a stand-alone option, costing £730 for SEL models (£930 for other Passats, excluding S-trim cars), or in combination with DVD-based sat-nav and a glovebox-mounted CD changer, at a hefty £2150. An iPod connection, in lieu of the CD changer, costs an extra £150.

The Dynaudio system does without the subwoofer bass boxes of some rivals: instead, it uses 10 door-mounted speakers. Whatever you play, you'll find the system's accuracy makes your music sound more expressive, and it can also go loud and low enough to satisfy most boy-racers.

Would we buy it, though? Let's put it this way: according to VW Finance, choosing Dynaudio will add around £30 a month to a typical PCP deal. If it was us - and we were planning to spend a lot of time in the car - we'd cough up.
