The all-new Hyundai i30 goes on sale today, with prices from £14,495 for the entry-level 1.4 Classic model to £20,795 for the range-topping Style Nav car.

It's a crucial launch for Hyundai, because the outgoing car was the Korean manufacturer's biggest-selling model in Europe. So, can the new, more efficient and luxurious iteration realise Hyundai's vision of a car that will rise beyond its 'good value' image and compete squarely with the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and VW Golf?



The UK range will start at £14,495 with a 99bhp 1.4 petrol, which is an increase of more than £700 on the previous entry-level model. It will also offer a 118bhp 1.6 petrol with a six-speed automatic transmission. The emphasis, though, is on diesels. There will be three: an 89bhp 1.4, and a 1.6 with either 109bhp or 126bhp. The leaner of the 1.6 diesels emits just 97g/km of CO2 in two of the car's four trims, but even its 126bhp sister hits 100g/km – and falls into road tax band A, when paired with a manual gearbox.

Standard equipment for entry-level Classic trim includes voice-activated Bluetooth, LED daytime running lights, USB and auxiliary input sockets, air-con and electrically adjustable, heated door mirrors.

Extra kit for Active trim includes 15-inch alloys, cruise control, electric rear windows, rear parking sensors, extra chrome trim and Hyundai's Flex Steer system, which has three settings: Comfort, Normal or Sport.

Style models get 16-inch alloys, dual-zone climate control, front parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, cornering lights, automatic headlights and electrically folding door mirrors with LED indicators.

Range-topping Style Nav adds an integrated touch-screen sat-nav system and rear-view parking camera.
