Hyundai to reveal Euro production base

05 October 2005

  • Decision expected within two weeks.
  • Czech Republic is favourite location.
  • New plant to be running by 2008.

Hyundai Tucson disguised

Hyundai will reveal in the next two weeks where it is to locate its planned European factory.

The favourite at the moment seems to be the Czech Republic – the company is known
to have had discussions with Czech Government officials.

If Hyundai does set up in the Czech Republic, it will be close to the plant due to be
opened by sister company Kia in 2006.

Kia is building a factory in Zilina in Slovakia to build a Ford Focus-sized family hatchback.

Hyundai, like Kia, is on a mission to improve the European appeal of its cars. It plans
the new factory to be in operation by 2008 and, although it hasn't said what car it
plans to build in Europe, a model sharing the same underpinnings as the Kia hatch
would be a logical option.
