Infiniti will reveal a two-seat, mid-engined electric sportscar at the Geneva show next March.

Nissan's Global Planning boss Andy Palmer revealed to What Car? that it will be a battery-powered Boxster-rival designed to boost the image of Infiniti and could make production.

The coupe concept is likely to use range extender technology, where the rear wheels are always driven by an electric motor but it's powered by a 1.0 or 1.2-litre petrol engine.

Palmer also revealed that plans for an electric Infiniti saloon using lots of Nissan Leaf technology are also in advanced stages. The new car will go on sale in 2014 and Palmer is promising even greater refinement, better performance and a 'more restrained' and more luxurious cabin than the Leaf.

Infiniti plans to triple its global sales between now and 2016.
