It’s almost time to call ‘house’ in the game of Audi bingo. We already have A’s 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 (along with a smattering of Q’s, R’s and S’s), while a new take on the advanced eco-friendly A2 is due in the next few years. Next to arrive, in January to be precise, is the A7 Sportback.

If you hanker after a big hatchback with class, style and the right badge, then the A7 could be the car for you. Audi would rather we call it a five-door coupé than a hatchback, fitting only four (rather comfy) seats to emphasise its sporty, rather than practical, credentials. A five-seat version will go on sale eventually, though.

The A7 Sportback is to next year’s new A6 what the A5 Sportback is to the A4 (or what the 5 Series GT is to the 5 Series). Like the A5, the A7 is a striking car. It can look a little dumpy in pictures, but on the road it looks lithe and hides its size well. It also features some of the most intricate and delightful design touches yet on an Audi.
