Gadgets that link iPods to car stereos are legalised today, but insurers warn against the added distraction posed by the music players when driving.
The devices, such as Griffin Technology's iTrip, work by broadcasting an MP3 player's output on an FM signal that can be picked up by a car stereo.
Until today, the gadgets have been illegal to use because they constituted an illegal broadcast under the Wireless Telegraphy Act. Griffin reckons the change will put 100,000 motorists using the technology on the right side of the law.
Privilege Insurance is urging motorists to use the technology with caution, however. It says MP3 players add to the already distracting environment of a car's cabin, and should be prepared in advance of a journey, so that motorists can properly concentrate on driving.
