Jaguar has unveiled a face-lifted version of its X-type compact executive.

Jaguar says the remodelled car has almost 500 new parts, but perhaps the biggest change is the addition of a six-speed automatic gearbox for buyers of the 2.2 diesel model. The gearbox includes a one-touch sequential shift system.

With the new gearbox, the 2.2D model can manage 0-60mph in 9.5sec and a top speed of 129mph. It averages 41mpg, but carbon dioxide emissions of 184g/km mean you'll pay £165 a year in road tax, because it falls into VED band E.

Another major change is the deletion of the 2.5-litre V6 petrol engine from the range - Jaguar says buyers are choosing diesels more and the market for the 2.5 has shrunk.

Many of the changes to the X-type are cosmetic, with a new exterior look incorporating a new mesh grille, new bumpers, and new sill and side mouldings.

You'll also find revised door mirrors with integrated indicator lights, two new alloy wheel designs, new paint choices, and new badging.

The cabin is also revised, getting more trim and equipment. There are digital radio options, for example, as well as an improved parking aid system and a new Bluetooth phone system that allows you to connect up to five phones to the car.

There are four new seat styles, one of which is part of a Sports pack. Sports pack seats have 10-way electric adjustment with a memory function on the driver's seat, and a diamond stitching which is continued on the door panels.

A Luxury pack offers the same adjustment and memory function, but adds walnut inserts to the door trims.

The instrument panel also gets a new, sportier look.

The new-look X-type goes on sale in March, with prices between £21,500 and £30,995.
