Jaguar XF and XJ four-wheel-drive models have been announced, but Jaguar says there are no plans to sell them in the UK.

The new XF and XJ 3.0 AWD models have an 'intelligent' four-wheel-drive system that sends most of the engine's power to the rear wheels in everyday driving conditions. If those wheels start to spin, up to 50% can be sent to the front wheels.

The system is available only with Jaguar's 335bhp 3.0-litre supercharged V6 petrol engine, linked to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Jaguar hasn't announced any plans to make a similar system available for its high-performance R models.

Jaguar predicts that more than three quarters of the new XF and XJ 3.0 AWD models will be sold in the USA.

According to Jaguar, less than 5% of luxury saloons sold in the UK have four-wheel drive. The majority are also sold with diesel engines.

Audi offers four-wheel drive versions of its A6 and A8 in the UK, but although four-wheel drive versions of the BMW 5 Series and 7 Series, and Mercedes and S-Class are available on the continent, these aren't sold in the UK.
