Skoda Octavia WINNER

Skoda achieves two top-10 placings in this year’s survey: the Octavia family car just out-pointing the Fabia supermini.
Exceptionally good mechanical reliability pushes the Skoda to the top of this class. Minor switchgear problems are more likely than any more serious trouble.
Octavia owners are fans of the way their car drives, too, with high scores for ride and handling. The comfort and practicality of the cabin is also praised.
There’s a big pat on the back for Skoda’s dealers, especially the advice which staff offer and the speed with which cars can be booked in for work. Servicing doesn’t cost the earth, either, and fuel and insurance costs are impressively low.

Subaru Legacy

12th overall
If it wasn’t for high ownership costs, the Subaru Legacy would be challenging the Skoda Octavia as this year’s top family car. Poor fuel consumption and steep servicing bills top Legacy owners’ complaints.
Otherwise, there’s much to praise. In spite of the steep servicing costs, Subaru drivers get on well with their dealers, praising their efficiency and customer care.
Reliability is another strong point. Mechanical woes are rare, while the interior is extremely well put together, with hardly any moans about rattling trim or flimsy switchgear.

Mazda 626

13th overall
There are strong scores for all Mazda models in this survey, with the 626 leading the way in 13th spot.
The Mazda earns its ranking with consistent scoring and no obvious weaknesses. Mechanical gremlins are almost unheard of, with the engine and transmission proving almost fault-free. Loose trim and malfunctioning switchgear is also very rare.
Running costs are pleasingly low, with owners reporting cheap fuel bills, although service prices are only average.
