VW Jetta is likely to cost from around £15,000 when it goes on sale in early 2006

This is the first look at the new Volkswagen Jetta saloon, which goes on sale in the UK early next year.

The new saloon is likely to be a little more expensive than the Golf it is based on, so expect to pay from around £15,000.

Five engines will be offered in the UK. Petrol variants include the 113bhp 1.6-litre and 148bhp or 197bhp 2.0-litre. Diesel engines are the 104bhp 1.9-litre or 138bhp 2.0-litre units. The diesels will be available with the impressive DSG transmission, which provides superfast automatic shifts and improved fuel efficiency.

The Jetta’s equipment levels are expected to mirror the Golf’s, so all cars should come with front, side and curtain airbags, remote central locking, air-conditioning, front electric windows and a CD player.

The Jetta is bigger than the Bora it replaces, so more room is promised in the cabin. Compared with the old model, boot space increases 72 litres to 527 litres, 177 litres more than the Golf. Rear seats fold forward to create an almost flat loadbay. An estate version is due at the end of next year.

The Jetta features VW’s new V-shaped chrome grille, also found on the new Passat. Although the recently face-lifted Polo and Golf GTI feature a similar look, VW said the Golf hatchback range will not adopt the grille treatment.
