I have a love-hate affair with the auto hold function on the electronic handbrake in my regular long-termer, the VW Golf. To be honest it’s more love than hate, because it works pretty well most of the time.
The A3 has the same feature, but this relationship is definitely more hate than love. The brake applies itself as it should, when you come to a halt, but it doesn’t always release cleanly when you pull away; sometimes it feels as if the brake pads are going to be torn out of the calipers.
It seems to be related to how quickly you lift the clutch pedal - do it too fast and the car just can’t react fast enough.

It’s not like I’ve been trying to beat people at the traffic lights, though, so a trip to the dealer may be in order.

I was lucky enough to spend a couple of hours in a flight simulator earlier in the week, and borrowed the Audi A3 Saloon for the trip from Dorset to Northampton.

The buttons, switches and knobs in a plane’s cockpit operate very precisely, as you might imagine. Everything clicks or whirs, and feels like it’ll last forever. All very reassuring.

When I got back in the Audi after my ‘flight’, and was setting the air-con temperature, I was struck by how similar the A3’s controls felt. More positive clicking and a feeling of solidity you don’t get in many other cars.

Audi interiors have led the way for many years. I sometimes wonder if we’re beginning to sound like a broken record when, in test after test, we praise another Audi’s superb build quality and materials. It really is true, though. They’re top notch.
