Detroit motor show 2008 - Kia Borrego

Article 24 of 44 See all
Kia is taking on the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ford Explorer with its new Borrego – and its big 4x4 may make it to the UK in the not-too-distant future.

The car, which has three rows of seats, is bigger than the current Sorento and boasts genuine off-road credentials, featuring downhill and hill assist controls as well as the usual raft of safety equipment such as ABS, traction control and stability control.

It has been deemed unsuitable for the UK market because it only comes with the choice of 3.8-litre V6 or 4.6-litre V8 petrol engines.

However, in Detroit, company bosses revealed that Kia will develop a diesel engine for the Borrego
within the life cycle of the first-generation car

'Without a diesel option it would not make sense for the UK market, because the segment demands it, apart from those customers looking for a large, luxury 4x4,' said Paul Philpott, managing director of Kia Motors (UK) Ltd.

Take that to mean that when the diesel comes, the Borrego will make it to our shores.

Buyers will be able to choose between rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive when the car goes on sale in the USA this summer, while a pick-up version of the car may follow if there is demand.
