Kia's new Picanto supermini looks like it will cost peanuts to tax and run after the car maker promised sub-100g/km versions for the UK.

Five-door versions of the car will go on sale in late spring, while three-door models won't appear until the autumn.

It will come with a choice of four new 1.0 or 1.2-litre petrol engines. The current 1.0-litre Picanto emits 114g/km of CO2 and doesn an average of 58.8mpg.

However Kia promises that some versions of the new Picanto, fitted with its ISG stop-start technology, will have CO2 emissions of 'between 90 and 100g/km'. So average fuel economy could be nearer 70mpg for some models.

The engines will be mated to either a five-speed manual or four-speed auto gearbox.

The new Picanto will get big-car features such as LED lights, button-start with smart key and six or seven airbags, depending on model.
