Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn has been knighted for the contribution he has made to relations between the UK and Japan.

The 52-year-old president and CEO of Nissan is now a Honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire.

As a foreign national, French-Brazilian Ghosn will not be allowed to use the title Sir, but can add KBE after his name. He said: 'I am deeply honoured by this recognition. This honour is dedicated to the hard work and achievements of our 5500 employees and 220 dealers that support the Nissan business in the UK.'

Nissan's Sunderland plant celebrates its 21st anniversary next year is and the most productive in the country, while it also has a design centre in London and a technical centre in Bedfordshire.

The 4x4-styled Qashqai small family car, which has been designed and engineered in the UK, and will also be built at Sunderland, will launch next year.
