Lamborghini's display at Geneva is as much about what's missing as what's there. The Italian supercar manufacturer has found a way of lopping 70 kilos off the four-wheel-drive Gallardo to create a new LP570-4 Superleggera (superlight).

What is it?
With a 10bhp increase in power to 562bhp, revised aerodynamics and reinforced suspension, it makes for an even more focused supercar, with a claimed top speed of 202mph and a 0-62mph time of just 3.4 seconds.

Weight-loss therapy
The weight loss is largely through substituting some of the aluminium sections of the regular LP560-4 with carbonfibre. Lamborghini works with Boeing and the University of Washington in Seattle on research into carbonfibre.

The Superleggera's engine cover, sills, underbody, rear diffuser, mirror housings and rear wing are made from this strong-but-light material, as are the central tunnel, seat shells, door trims and gearshift paddles. More weight has been saved by fitting polycarbonate windows in place of glass ones. Even the 19-inch wheels help keep the car's mass down.

The Superleggera therefore becomes Lamborghini's lightest model, which results in a 20.5% improvement in CO2 output and fuel consumption (now16mpg), even though the 5.2-litre direct-injection V10 now puts out 562bhp at 8000rpm.

Aerodynamics
The aerodynamic changes increase the flow of cooling air to the engine as well as help to increase downforce. There's a new front bumper, side sills and rear diffuser.

Meanwhile, the dampers and anti-roll bars are firmer, while the suspension mounts have been reinforced.
