Lancia will almost certainly make a return to the UK in 2009 after an absence of 13 years.
Fiat's worldwide marketing director Steve Norman said: 'The plan is not yet signed off, but the Delta is being engineered for right-hand drive and it would be the perfect car to relaunch the brand.'
He also said that Lancias would probably be sold through the Alfa Romeo, rather than the Fiat, dealer network.
The new Delta will be built on the same platform as the Fiat Bravo, which goes on sale on Saturday.
The Delta will make its debut in the second half of next year, and will probably be followed by a supermini in 2009 and a Nissan Qashqai rival soon after.
