Land Rover Defender soldiers on

- Tough 4x4 lives on until at least 2010
- More road-suited version is possible after 2010
- Small, sub-Freelander 4x4 may be built, too
Major updates are on the way for the Land Rover Defender that will see it remain on sale until 2010 at the earliest.
Land Rover says the car will be given 'a series of upgrades' from spring next year. The company will detail the changes later this year.
The manufacturer says it is also looking into whether there is any way it can further extend the Defender's lifespan beyond 2010.
An all-new version with a similar emphasis on pure off-roading ability isn't out of the question, but new, models more suited to on-road driving are more likely.
Land Rover is also thought to be considering a smaller off-roader to sit below the all-new Freelander, which makes its first appearance at the British Motor Show in London this summer.
Insiders report that the project could be built around the platform used for the Ford Focus, which will itself be available in a 4x4 version next year.
