Overall 5/5 stars
Front impact 94%
Side impact 100%
Child protection 84% 4/5 stars
Pedestrian 50% 2/4 starsThis five-star result was awarded at the
Lexus GS's second attempt at the Euro-NCAP crash tests. A re-test was allowed after a door opened during the first side-impact test.
Overall, the car's body proved to be very strong, offering good protection for all occupants. The level of protection on offer to pedestrians and other vulnerable road users was also judged to be fairly good.
During the front impact test there was minimal deformation of the car's structure, and safety kit such as airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners all worked well to minimise the risk of injury. The knee airbag was effective and foam padding protected the driver’s feet.
The Lexus scored maximum points in the side and pole tests due to its impressive side impact protection system and strong bodyshell, and both child dummies were well protected in both tests.
The GS only just missed out on three stars for pedestrian protection. The level of cushioning provided for the areas where a child’ and, to a lesser extent, an adult’s head might strike was good, and the bumper complied with regulations. The bumper’s leading edge, on the other hand, offered less protection.
