Latest crash test results - Mercedes A-Class

28 June 2005
Overall 5/5 stars
Front impact 88%
Side impact 100%
Child protection 63% 3/5 stars
Pedestrian 47% 2/4 stars

The new A-Class performed well in the latest round of Euro-NCAP crash tests thanks to its strong passenger cell and plentiful safety kit.

In the front impact test, the car’ shell suffered minimal deformation and there was little intrusion into the footwells. The driver’s door could be opened normally after impact and the dual-stage airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners and load limiters all worked to protect the front seat occupants.

Seat-mounted head and thorax airbags, along with the strong structure, protected the car’ occupants well during the side and pole tests, where the A-class was awarded full marks.

Child protection was good. Both the three-year-old and the 18-month-old dummies were well protected by the seats chosen by Mercedes for the test. However, testers noted that the stickers warning parents of the dangers in placing a rearward facing seat opposite the front passenger airbag were not permanent and could easily be peeled off.

The pedestrian protection on offer was average, gaining the A-Class two stars. The bumper complied with regulations and the bonnet top offered limited cushioning.
