Latest crash test results - Renault Clio

28 June 2005
Overall 5/5 stars
Front impact 88%
Side impact 100%
Child protection 80% 4/5 stars
Pedestrian 25% 1/4 stars

Renault has developed yet another Euro-NCAP five-star car in the shape of the new Clio. This is the sixth Renault to have been awarded five stars for occupant safety but only the third supermini ever, after the Renault Modus and Peugeot 1007, to gain the top result.

The Clio performed well during the front-impact test with little deformation to the car’ body or intrusion to the passenger cell. The seatbelts and airbags worked well to minimise the risk of injury to the occupants, but contact with the steering wheel shroud and the glovebox lid could result in knee injuries.

Side impact protection was good, with seat-mounted thorax airbags and head curtain airbags to limit the risk of serious injuries to the occupants.

Both child dummies were well protected in the side-impact test, but in the front-impact test, the three-year-old dummy recorded high chest loads. Neck loads recorded by the 18-month-old dummy were a little higher than they should have been. The Clio did, however, offer good overall protection.

Pedestrian protection was disappointing. While the bonnet gave some cushioning to both adult and child pedestrians, the wings, bonnet leading edge and the bumper offered no protection.
