The new Chevrolet Aveo has received the first two-star Euro NCAP crash rating in six years, an extremely poor result.

The Aveo is a face-lifted version of the current Kalos model, and while the majority of today's cars receive four- and five-star ratings, the new Chevrolet supermini concerned Euro NCAP so much that it highlighted concerns about 'unacceptable life-threatening injuries'.

In contrast, the new Peugeot 207 supermini received the maximum rating of five stars.

The latest round of NCAP tests also awarded a five-star rating to the Alfa 159 for occupant safety, but one star for pedestrian protection.

The Suzuki SX4 and Hyundai Tuscon each received four stars for occupant safety, but the Kia Cerato came in with three, and was criticised for its poor side-impact test results, which would bring a high risk of injury to a driver's chest.
