Croma,
Yaris get five stars
Four stars for Sirion
Poor pedestrian rating for Fiat
A trio of new Euro NCAP crash test results have been released, with two of the cars winning the top five-star ranking.
Both the Fiat Croma family car and next year's new Toyota Yaris supermini were awarded the five-star ranking, while the Daihatsu Sirion was awarded four stars.
Although the Croma managed to win the top overall score, it recorded one of the lowest pedestrian impact results ever and was awarded just one out of a four possible stars by Euro NCAP.
Originally Euro NCAP had planned to incorporate pedestrian and occupant results into one overall rating but later scrapped the idea.
Road safety organisation Brake said: 'It's high time car manufacturers invested more in improving the design of vehicles to protect pedestrians. Combining the ratings for both occupant and pedestrian safety to give each vehicle an overall safety score would prevent manufacturers ignoring their poor pedestrain safety scores.'
