Overall occupant protection 3/5 stars
Front impact 38%
Side impact 61%
Child protection 53% 3/5 stars
Pedestrian 31% 2/4 starsAirbags failed to properly cushion the driver dummy's head in frontal-impact tests and so contact was made with the upper part of the steering wheel, which deformed as a result. The lower part of the steering wheel was deformed by contact with the chest.
Damage around the driver's door aperture suggested that the bodyshell had been loaded as far as possible and could not have withstood a more severe impact.
Structures in the dashboard presented a potential hazard to the knees and femurs of the driver and the passenger, while chest protection in side-impact tests was also rated as 'weak'. There is no seatbelt reminder on the Kalos.
The head of the dummy representing a three-year-old child moved forward more than 550mm in the frontal test, making it vulnerable to contact with parts of the car's interior and injury.
A rearward-facing child restraint should not be used in the front passenger's seat, because the airbag in that position cannot be deactivated. The presence of ISOFIX anchorages in the rear seats was also not sufficiently marked.
The bumper scored no points for the protection it offered to pedestrians' lower legs.
