Pedestrian 58% 3/4 starsIn the first frontal test, the airbags fired late. Toyota modified the software in the control unit so that the airbags fired earlier and Euro NCAP allowed Toyota to re-test the modified car.
The airbags then fired as intended, but Toyota has informed Euro NCAP that it does not intend to apply these modifications to cars already sold. The driver's knees bottomed-out the knee airbag and contacted the support bracket.
The RAV4 scored maximum points for its performance in the side-impact and pole tests.
The passenger airbag could be deactivated to allow rear-facing child seats to be used in the front passenger seat, but information on the status of the airbag was not clear enough.
No points were awarded for the protection offered by the leading edge of the bonnet. However, the performance of the bumper and the bonnet suggests that these areas have been designed with pedestrian protection in mind.
