This is the latest computer-generated image showing how Volkswagen's new Scirocco could look when it is launched next year.

Although the car marks the return of the Scirocco name to VW's range for the first time since 1992, the new 2+2 coupe has little in common with its predecessor.

Based on the same platform as the current Golf, it has already been heavily previewed as the Iroc concept car at motor shows since 2006.

The engine options haven't been revealed yet, but are likely to include everything from VW's 120bhp, 140bhp and 170bhp 1.4-litre TSI units through to several performance options, including 230bhp and 280bhp versions of the turbo-charged 2.0-litre FSI.

A 250bhp 3.2-litre V6-powered car featuring VW's 4Motion four-wheel-drive system has also been rumoured.

Buyers will have a choice of a six-speed manual or semi-automatic gearbox.

The Scirocco is expected to go on sale in late 2008 and cost from £18,000.
