Local transport's extra £4 billion

29 November 2007

The Government has announced an additional £4 billion will be invested in local transport over the next three years.

The money is in addition to the £7.9 billion already committed to funding transport projects between 2006 and 2016.

It will be spent on initiatives including improving bus networks, increasing the number of cycle lanes, new road safety measures, better street lighting and road maintenance.

Transport Minister Rosie Winterton said: 'Well-planned local transport can transform local communities. Tackling congestion, improving road safety and providing genuine alternatives to the car are essential to people's quality of life and the economy.'
