Toyota iQ 1.0 VVT-i
Price £9495
Target Price £9178

If Zaki needs space for more than three, the iQ won't do – it can really carry only three people at best. If he doesn't, the baby Toyota won't cost him a penny in car tax and should manage a whopping 65mpg.

Suzuki Swift 1.3 DDiS 5dr, '08/08

The Suzuki Swift has been around a few years, but it's still a lot of car for the money. This diesel version is in group four for insurance, and should average 61mpg. A tax disc costs just £35, too.

Nissan Note 1.5 dCi Acenta '08/08
Price £9200

A more spacious take on a supermini, and surprisingly classy inside. There are plenty of year-old Notes in Zaki's budget, and the 1.5-litre diesel version meet all his criteria. Our top choice.
