Mazda CX-5 review

The CX-5 tried its hand at allotment work this week, shifting sacks of rubbish and detritus from my new plot to our local recyling centre.

Getting the car ready for duty was the work of seconds, with the seats quickly and easily folding almost flat without having to remove the headrests. There's no load lip to the boot so it was easy to heave in our groaning bags, and there was absolutely tons of space available.

The Mazda's responsive handling and punchy engine made the journey to the tip itself a pleasure, too.

I needed a new tax disc for the CX-5 at the start of the month and yet again the car scores a big tick in the running costs box. The car sits in VED C - CO2 emissions are less than 120g/km - a tax disc just costs £30.

The CX-5 came back from its week-long group test last week with one thing missing: a beep. One of my colleagues managed to stop the car emitting a beep when you lock it. Personally, I find a beep reassuring because it confirms that I've actually locked the car.

It's pretty straightforward to change; just go into the vehicle settings function and change the volume of the beep. Seems an odd feature to be able to adjust, mind you.

We needed the CX-5 for some group test action this week, which meant I found myself testing it around Millbrook proving ground's test tracks. As ever, I was hugely impressed with its ability to handle like something with much less height and weight, but I can't deny that our long termer is beginning to show its 18,000 miles – mostly due to a noisy and seriously irritating rattle coming from somewhere around the boot.

Apart from that, the CX-5 continues to prove how easy it is to live with, and how complete it is, even against the newest competition.
