The forthcoming Maserati Kubang SUV will be the company's first diesel-powered model when it goes on sale in late 2014.
Roberto Corradi, vice-president of product development, told What Car? that a diesel engine was essential if the Kubang is to compete with rivals – such as the Porsche Cayenne – in European markets.
Corradi refused to be drawn on which engine Maserati would use, but the 237bhp 3.0-litre V6 diesel from the latest Jeep Grand Cherokee seems to be the likeliest candidate.
When asked how a diesel engine would fit with Maserati's reputation for building great sounding cars, Corradi said that Maserati was looking at ways to use the Kubang's stereo system to provide drivers with a sportier engine note.
