Massive savings on current-model Volvo XC90s

  • Save £10,000 on Volvo's seven-seat 4X4
  • Supple ride, comfortable driving position
  • Highly rated for mechanical reliability

The current Volvo XC90 is fast approaching the end of its life, with an all-new model due for release early in 2015. This means that big discounts are available on the outgoing model, if you know where to look.

With this in mind, we thought we’d take a look at what deals are out there on the current car, as well as the existing model’s strengths and weaknesses.

For

The XC90 is massive inside with plenty of space in the first two seat rows. The two rear seats are only really suitable for chidlren, but when they're folded down the XC90 has a very large load bay.

The car is comfortable, too. Supple suspension gives the XC90 a smooth ride while also keeping the car’s bulk in check around corners. An on-demand all-wheel-drive system keeps traction in check, too.

The 2.4-litre five-cylinder diesel engine has enough power to keep the XC90 moving in traffic and comes with a six-speed automatic gearbox.

Against

It’s an old car when compared with its rivals. The engine and gearbox are hesitant at low revs, and the diesel unit is noisy and unrefined at all speeds. It sends vibrations through the steering wheel and is pretty noisy under acceleration.

Road noise may be well contained, but the engine and wind noise intrude into the cabin. Even at a cruise there is a constant drone from under the bonnet.

The XC90 isn’t as sharp to drive as a BMW X5 or Mercedes M-Class, either.

With the Volvo's replacement due imminently and promising to move the game on in a variety of areas, it may be worth waiting if you can afford to do so.

What deals are available?

We have searched a list of broker sites and found that a number of them are no longer showing a supply of XC90s, although this seems more to do with the model's continuing popularity than Volvo winding down production.

The sites that currently have discounts available are: Motorparks.co.uk, Orangewheels.co.uk, Coast2coastcars.co.uk and Carfile.net.

Of these we found the best deals are currently at Carfile.net, but it is worth searching all the sites as availability and the deals on offer are constantly changing.

Below are a few examples of what’s out there today

Volvo XC90 2.4 D5 [200] ES 5dr Geartronic
List price: £37,115
Discounted price: £28,828
Saving: £9287

The ES model is the entry point for XC90 ownership, and at just less than £29,000 this represents a lot of car for the money. Included in the price are 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors, leather seats and an eight-speaker stereo with USB and auxiliary input.

Volvo XC90 2.4 D5 [200] SE 5dr Geartronic
List price: £40,190
Discounted price: £30,519
Saving: £9671

The SE model is our pick of the range based on a decent level of standard equipment, balanced with a reasonable on-the-road price. With nearly £10,000 off the list price, this deal makes it even more attractive. Standard spec includes Bluetooth, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat with memory function, 18-inch alloy wheels, auto wipers and an auto dimming rear view mirror.

Volvo XC90 2.4 D5 [200] Executive 5dr Geartronic
List price: £45,715
Discounted price: £35,353
Saving: £10,362

Normally we would say that the top-of-the-range Executive model looks too expensive. However, with £10,362 off, it makes more sense, especially when you consider it comes with 19-inch alloy wheels, sat-nav, ventilated front seats with massage function, a premium sound system and upgraded cabin trim with wood inlays.
