Stocking up on plants from the garden centre this week, I overfilled my trolley, confident I would squeeze everything in our Suzuki when I came to take them home. I wasn’t disappointed.

Flipping the back seats down can be done with one hand, so juggling various plant pots and tubs of fence paint in the other hand, I could easily maximize the space for all my purchases.

The car was literally stuffed full of plants and shrubs, all of which the S-Cross swallowed in one go. Smaller pots of herbs and seedlings were safe in the boot’s two cubby holes and there was no danger of any of the bigger shrubs rolling around and squashing them.

Even a very delicate four-foot tall willow tree slid easily down the centre on its side, and I didn’t even have to suffer its leaves tickling my ears as I drove home.

I’m taking the S-Cross on holiday next week to Dorset, so it’ll be interesting to see how it fares with a week’s worth of luggage, scooters, buckets and spades, various teddies and all the usual junk a family of four take on holiday.

I love so many things about the SX4 S-Cross, but if I had to choose one thing that frustrates me, it would be the Bluetooth connectivity.

As a busy parent, time is precious and I don't often have a lot of it to dedicate to what should be a simple task. There have been a few times when I've jumped in the car, wishing my iPhone was connected so I could take calls or just listen to something other than the radio, but thought, ‘I'll do that when I've got time’. Unsurprisingly, I never get around to it.

So, stuck in traffic last weekend, I took the opportunity to switch seats with my husband so I could pair the Bluetooth once and for all. After numerous attempts at pressing buttons on the steering wheel and on the centre console, I finally did it, but it took an awful lot of perseverance.

My colleague Matthew Burrow had similar problems last month, so I'm glad I'm not the only one who struggled.

I'm very proud that this week the S-Cross has passed the 60mpg barrier and I've managed an average of 61.2mpg. It's a combination of doing longer trips to see family and friends over the Bank Holiday weekend, plus the fact I am getting used to how to best drive the car economically.

I'm making sure I don't rev it too much in every day driving and that I always use the Stop-Start system when I can. I really believe this has helped me achieve this figure, which is almost 20mpg more than I was getting a couple of months ago.

A little bit of maintenance was needed on the S-Cross this week as I realised I'd run out of windscreen washer fluid.

A combination of dry weather, nesting birds and a pollen invasion meant I was needing to clear the windscreen a couple of times a day, being parked where it is on our leafy tree-lined road.

Enlisting the help of my two boys, and armed with our diluted blue liquid, it took us a little while to find the bonnet release handle under the steering wheel, but once it had opened up, it was immediately obvious where to fill up - a bright blue plastic cap with the wipers symbol on it.

My youngest helped pour the fluid in and seal the cap - a good team effort all round and dare I say it, Suzuki have made a little bit of maintenance child's play.
