This is the Mazda 2 supermini as you've never seen it before – with three doors.

It is the first time that Mazda has offered a three-door version of its popular supermini. The three-door’s sporty looks and, according to Mazda, its lower price should guarantee it plenty of attention.

That price hasn't been confirmed yet, although it's expected to be about £500 less than the five-door models, which would mean a starting price of £7999.

Power comes from the same engines as in the five-door car – a 1.3-litre petrol, a 1.5-litre petrol and a frugal 1.4-litre turbodiesel. A hot turbocharged MPS version will follow.

The Taiki concept car – previously seen at the Tokyo motor show and powered by a next-generation rotary engine – is also on display at Geneva.

It is joined on the Mazda stand by an upgraded RX-8 coupé and a hydrogen hybrid version of the Mazda 5 MPV, which are being shown in Europe for the first time.
