Mazda has said that emissions-based congestion charging could help boost sales of diesel superminis, including its new 2.
Mazda's marketing director, Mark Cameron, said that only around 10% of buyers would choose a 2 with the 1.4-litre diesel engine when the car goes on sale in December.
'Lots of cities are looking at rolling out a similar congestion charging scheme as London. If they choose the same model as the one London is proposing – where cars with CO2 emissions of less than 120g/km will be exempt – we expect there will be a growth in demand for the diesel,' he said.
Diesel cars typically have lower emissions than their petrol equivalents, and those fitted with particulate filters can eliminate 99% of harmful soot particles that the engines produce.
