Mazda: 'hot-hatch 2 MPS could be built'

Friday, September 28, 2007

Mazda says it could build a hot-hatch version of its all-new 2 supermini if there's enough demand for it.

There's no news on what engine it could have, but Mazda engineers say that a 2 MPS is technically possible.

Mazda also said that two new gearboxes could be made available for the 2 if enough people show an interest in them.

In Japan, the 2 comes with the option of automatic and CVT gearboxes, and the company says it would offer them to UK buyers if there's a market for them.

The 2 is currently on sale as a five-door, but Mazda has plans to sell a three-door version - although it hasn't said when this might happen.

• Mazda will show a revised RX-8 Coupe at the Tokyo motor show. It will also exhibit a petrol/hydrogen hybrid version.
